Appleton Descendant Visits St Lawrence
It was a great pleasure welcoming Phil Samponaro to St Lawrence last Sunday to the morning service, followed by tea and biscuits and a look at the brasses commemorating his ancestors, Robert and Mary Appleton, who rest in the floor of St. Lawrence.
Phil is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and, by his own account, a g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-grandson of Robert and Mary. Since boyhood Phil has viewed photos of the brasses but hankered after seeing them firsthand, going on to note that “My maternal g-g-uncle, antiquarian George Dudley Seymour, did much to promote Little Waldingfield and the memory of the Appletons in the family”.
We hope to see Phil with his family next year and to spend a little more time with them.
