The Amazing Story of Rev’d. John Heigham Steggall, the Suffolk Gypsy – Our Next Event
On Wednesday 17th April, at 7.30 in the LW Parish Room, Pip Wright will tell us the true story of a local man who lead an amazing life 200 years ago.
Around 1800 this son of a parson ran away from school at Walsham-le-Willows and joined a family of gypsies. Involved in the shooting of a gamekeeper, he was arrested at Norton, tried at Ixworth and imprisoned in Bury. Later he trained as a doctor at Bacton, sailed to the South Seas on a whaling ship, served with the army in India, was a surgeon at Rattlesden and ended his long life as a vicar at Great Ashfield.
LWHS events are open to all, young or old, members or not, and if you like history, whether recent, ancient or somewhere in between, then you will enjoy our talks. Just £4.00 (or £2.00 if a member), gives access to presentations lasting about an hour, which are followed by tea/coffee, plus biscuits, in the company of like minded individuals.
